CAF Champions League: Ethiopian Clubs Struggle in Group Stage

By Meles Habtezghi, Sports Correspondent — Specializing in East African football developments

Ethiopian football clubs continue to face hurdles in the ongoing 2024 CAF Champions League group stage, reflecting broader difficulties for East African sides in continental tournaments. Both Saint George and Fasil Kenema, representing Ethiopia’s top tier, have found the competition challenging against financially stronger North and West African clubs.

After four group matches, Saint George sits at the bottom of Group C with just three points, while Fasil Kenema occupies the third spot in Group D with four points. The Ethiopian Premier League champions have struggled to maintain consistency, with Saint George conceding seven goals and scoring only three. Meanwhile, Fasil Kenema’s defense has been tested by more experienced opponents, leading to two narrow defeats and one draw.

“Ethiopian clubs’ performances in CAF competitions are impacted by both infrastructural challenges and the financial gap compared to clubs from Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia,” explains Dr. Tesfaye Alemu, football analyst at the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF). “Investment in player development and better exposure to international competition remain crucial.”

This situation is not unique to Ethiopia. East African clubs in general have found it difficult to make deep runs in the Champions League and Confederation Cup for several seasons. According to CAF 2023 data, North African clubs accounted for more than 60% of quarter-final spots in the past five years, highlighting the regional imbalance in resources and experience.

The Ethiopian Premier League itself is in a phase of gradual professionalism improvement. For instance, average attendance figures reported by the EFF show a rise from 3,500 in 2021 to nearly 5,000 per match at key venues in Addis Ababa and Bahir Dar during the 2023 season. Enthusiasm among fans remains high, with matches often watched communally in cafés and sports bars across the country.

Nevertheless, the financial and logistical challenges persist for clubs competing internationally. Limited sponsorship and infrastructure shortfalls affect both player recruitment and preparation. “The clubs benefit from digital platforms such as telebirr and CBE Birr for payment and transfers, but this does not fully bridge the funding gap,” noted Getachew Asmare, sports finance consultant with Addis Standard Africa.

Continental competitions also highlight the need for strengthened youth academies and coaching standards. While Saint George is praised for its academy initiatives, other clubs like Bahir Dar Kenema and Adama City are still building sustainable youth development systems. These grassroots investments are essential for improving competitive balance over time.

Notably, Ethiopian clubs are increasingly using betting data analytics abstracted from external sources, including platforms like betx, to inform scouting and tactical decisions. While this approach remains limited by budget constraints, it underscores a modernizing trend in Ethiopian football management.

However, these benefits come with caution. The intersection of football and the gambling industry poses ethical questions in Ethiopia’s rapidly evolving market. Responsible gaming policies remain under debate, with regulators seeking balance between economic benefits and consumer protection. The Ethiopian Ministry of Trade recently emphasized the importance of monitoring advertising and addiction risks in line with the country’s broader digital payment expansion.

Looking ahead, Ethiopian clubs’ performances in the CAF Champions League will likely serve as a benchmark for domestic football’s progress. Enhancements in league governance, financial transparency, and international exposure are crucial for closing the regional competitive gap. As the group stages continue into the summer, attention turns to whether Saint George and Fasil Kenema can secure the points needed to advance, or if East African representation will again be limited beyond the preliminary rounds.
